2006 Los Angeles Awards Reception
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
The Los Angeles Influencer Awards Reception was presented by Urban Influence Magazine and Macy’s West; co-hosted by the Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals (LAULYP).
The fifth event in the series of Influencer Receptions was held this past December at the Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood, California. More than 200 attendees witnessed the special honors given in the four categories of Community Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Career Excellence and Mentoring.
Macy’s West Vice President of External Affairs and Diversity Management, Carolyn Jackson, shared remarks and presented each of the honorees with a $150 gift cards, just in time for the holiday shopping season. Honorees also received huge gift baskets which included autographed books by Tavis Smiley, annual subscriptions to Urban Influence Magazine, product samples from Clear Essence, and 2 roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines, to anywhere the carrier flies.
Honorees included:
- Mentoring TORCH Award - Gene & Sandra Fisher, Founder and President, Watts Learning Center
- Entrepreneurship Award - Cherice R. Calhoun, Founder and Publisher, BlackNLA.com
- Career Excellence - Milton L. Payne, Doctor of Chiropractic
- Community Leadership – Justin Sanders, Senior Associate, Sidley Austin LLP, former President, LAULYP
LAULYP president, Felton Newell, was the emcee for the evening and UIM Publisher, Tamara Brown opened the program with a video presentation about UIM.
Previous Influencer Awards receptions were held in Baltimore, Chicago, Atlanta and New York.

2005 Influencer
Awards: 'A Toast to Excellence' Recap
Urban Influence Magazine honored four
emerging leaders with the
inaugural Influencer Award in a historic celebration at
the 2005
Influencer Summit in Washington, DC.
Over 300 attendees at the Toast of Excellence Reception
witnessed in awe as esteemed presenters Dr. Cornel West,
Tavis Smiley, Cathy Hughes and Tamara M. Brown paid homage
to four influencers who embody excellence.
Urban Influence Magazine Publisher Tamara M. Brown, who
created the magazine to speak to the spirit, ambition and
social conscience of today's emerging leaders, presented
B. Michael Young, National President, NULYP with the Publisher's
Award.
Cathy Hughes, Founder and Chairperson of Radio One Inc.,
presented the Influencer Award to U.S. State Representative
Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN). Broadcaster and Author Tavis Smiley
presented the award to Victor Marsh, a recent Stanford graduate
off to Princeton this Fall for graduate studies. The highlight
of the evening was the profound speech by Dr. Cornel West
in honor of Eddie Glaude, Director of African-American Studies
at Princeton University.
Many notables were in attendance including Dick Gregory,
George Fraser, Yvette Moyo, Kofi Moyo and John Mack (former
Los Angeles Urban League President). The Influencer Awards
was sponsored by U.S. Cellular, SunTrust, Urban Financial
Services Coalition, Allstate Insurance Company, PG&E
